Education Administration
Overview and Degrees

School leadership and administration professionals work to set educational goals and standards for their faculty and staff in order to execute the vision of the school or college. Although they are often heavily involved with the instructional methods within their school, they are also responsible for financial planning, budgeting, record-keeping, and participation with school and district committees. Many principals are also becoming involved in fundraising with local business and community members due to ongoing budget constraints throughout the country.

Career Options

Many career opportunities for school leaders are found in public and private schools as principals, assistant principals, superintendants, or school board members. Within colleges and universities, these professionals may work as academic deans, department heads, or provosts. While some childcare facilities seek administrators with advanced administrative training, most seek individuals prepared at the undergraduate level. Some of the career options for education leadership and administration professionals might include:

  • Principal
  • Assistant Principal
  • Superintendent
  • Department Head
  • Academic Officer
  • Academic Dean
  • Childcare Director or Supervisor
Education and Training Requirements

Individuals wishing to lead childcare organizations as supervisors or directors can benefit from a bachelor's degree in education or early childhood education, before pursuing a master's degree in educational administration. These bachelor's programs provide a deep understanding of educational theory, classroom management practices, educational psychology, and teaching methodology.

Elementary, middle, and high school teachers wishing to become school administrators should have several years classroom teaching experience (some states set minimum requirements) in addition to a master's degree in educational administration. Programs in educational leadership can be completed as certificate programs or as a master's degree. These programs will provide a deep understanding of educational law, finance, strategic planning, and management practices.

Doctoral programs in educational leadership prepare individuals to conduct ongoing educational research or to work as professors in colleges and universities. Research focuses are often focused on a specific area of education that is of special interest to the student, such as ethics and leadership theory, or learning theories.

Education Administration Certifications

Administrators in public schools must also complete additional testing in order to receive their administrative license. Many states use the Praxis II tests while other states have developed their own certification exams.

Individuals entering this program should already possess a current teaching license if they plan to work in a public school. Individuals interested in post-secondary institutions should check with their state agency to see if state certification is required. Most states now require directors of childcare centers to maintain state certification, but this varies from state to state.
